There is debate as to how cosmetics affect the Celiac/ Gluten free person. Each individual needs to determine their comfort level with the products that they are using on their skin and hair. If it comes in contact with your nose or mouth you may want that product to be gluten free. Some areas of concern might be; lipstick and lipliner, cleanser and moisturizer, make up base and face powder, and do not overlook hand cream. There are numerous inquiries about hair care, especially hairspray.
Remember, when looking for cosmetics the same rules apply as when you are food shopping. READ THE LABELS! The following is a list of ingredients names that are Standard FDA approved and used throughout the cosmetic industry.

Kay has purchased shea butter from Africa. This skin care product is excellent for dry skin all over the body. She can prepare the butter with 4 essential oils. They are lavender, Ylang-ylang, Bergamot, and mint. The fragrances can be mixed in any combination. Kay has a wealth of information on skin care products. AVOID COMMON GLUTEN INGREDIENTS IN COSMETICS:
Barley, Dextrins, Hydrogenated Soy Glycerides, Hydrogenated Coco-Glycerides, Hydrogenated Palm Glycerides, Hydrogenated Palm Kernel Glycerides, Hydrogenated Tallow Glycerides, Hydrogenated Vegetable Glycerides, Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein Hydroxypropyl Polysiloxane, Hydrolyzed Whole Wheat Protein, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Sunflower Seed Oil Glycerides, Wheat Amino Acids, Wheat Bran Extract, Wheat Extract, Wheat Germ Glycerides, Wheat Germ Oil, Tall Oil Glycerides.
Other ingredient information to be aware of:
- Alcohol: source usually synthetic or distilled - no problem for celiacs in general
- *Colorants: May utilize a grain ingredient in the manufacturing process. All cosmetic companies use grain-based colorants to bind, which might be questionable.
- Citric Acid: May utilize a grain ingredient in the manufacturing process.
- Millet: May need to be avoided, pending further research.
- Oat Flour: Cross contamination can occur during processing of oat and wheat.
- Glycerides, monoglycerides, diglycerides, and triglycerides: May contain a carbohydrate chain used as a binding substance in their preparation, which is usually corn or wheat.
- Flavor/Flavour/Natural Flavoring: Products containing flavors should be avoided.
ROSACEA
This is the regimen Mary Kay Medical Relations suggested. People with Rosacea should avoid the sun, spicy foods and alcohol. Recheck for gluten ingredients.

Day Solution with SPF 15 or Daily Protection Moisturizer with SPF 15
People with Rosacea must avoid products that have masking in them, alcohol, fragrance ( like Velocity & Cream-to-Powder foundation). No Time-Wise 3-in-1 Cleaner/Age Fighting Moisturizer, no Blemish Control Toner, no Night Solution, no Purifying Freshener.
It is recommended that people with Rosacea use one product at a time; for example, try the cleanser that is recommended and use it for several days before trying another product.
Things to avoid: Irritants, Mechanical Abrasives, Salicylates, Ascorbates (Vitamin Ck), Alcohol, PABA. No Alpha-hydroxy. No masks or exfoliants, such as the TimeWise 3-in-1 Cleanser or the Velocity cleanser.
