Ross Cohen Co-Founder, Triumph Dining
We have a website that provides gluten free resources for restaurant dining, and I think it might be of interest to your members.
We publish The Essential Gluten Free Restaurant Guide and Triumph Dining Cards, to help Celiacs navigate the challenges of restaurant dining. Our webpage is located at http://www.triumphdining.com. The Dining Guide has 3,800+ restaurant locations listed for all 50 states and the gluten-free lists or menus to 80+ chain restaurants. The Dining Cards are laminated and come in 10 different languages. Each card is translated and reviewed by at least 3 native speakers of the language being translated.
We've had a good amount of mainstream media exposure, including coverage in the Philadelphia Inquirer and Washington Post. You can see the Post article at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/17/AR2006101700318.html.
Around Town Gluten Free
Antares: Nancy Isreal talked with the manager ahead of time, and she said to see her when Nancy arrived. They already have an extensive list of food allergies and the appropriate menu items for each allergy. The waiter made a note that Nancy required GF food on the order, and the chef even noticed that the potatoes she ordered were not GF, and suggested the rice as an alternative. 6/03
Asian MINT (Asian Fusion Cafe & Bar) 11617 North Central Expressway, Suite 135 Dallas, TX 75243 214-363-6655 Their GF Menu
Banana Leaf Thai Cuisine: 17370 Preston Road, Dallas, TX75252, (972) 713-0123. I just wanted to report that last night I ate dinner at the Banana Leaf Thai Cuisine restaurant and they could not have been nicer and more aware of gluten! They cater to food particularities and will modify all their dishes to your liking. Liz Cooper in Plano 7/31/06
Beau Nash and Abacus: Nancy spoke to the cook at both places ahead of time and was able to get great custom GF meals. Nancy Israel 6/03
Blue Mesa Grill: I would stay away from anything that has flour tortillas. I'm cautious about our steak and chicken as many items have been marinated in soy. I'm not sure if there is flour in the corn tortillas, so maybe you should avoid them to be safe. I've really narrowed the choices in case there are traces of soy in some items.
Good choices would be: GLUTEN FREE MENU ITEMS 4/15/08 • Tableside Guacamole • Queso Blanco • Warm Black Bean-Bacon Queso Dip • Painted Desert Soup • Avocado, Mango & Jicama Salad with Grilled Shrimp • Slow Roasted Chicken with Caramelized Honey Ancho Glaze • Red Chile Crusted Salmon (has a cornmeal crust) • Fish of the Day & Spa Fish of the Day • Adobe Pie (both kinds are made with corn) • Vegetable Sampler • Sauces: Three Chile Sauce, Chipotle Cream and Tomatillo Sauces • Flan
BOSTON MARKET Check out there GF Menu Note: (monitor their serving methods because they tend to use same tongs for multiple items, i.e. bread)
Bowlarama: 5021 Lakeway Pkwy Rowlett, TX 972-475-708. The Manager, Jim, was extremely helpful. He read me ingredients and took the time to work my issue. I ordered the Caesar Salad without dressing w/a plain grilled chicken breast. (I brought my own dressing and added some almonds.) It worked great. Jim said all the dressing were from Cisco foods and since I do not know anything about Cisco, I just avoided them. It was a very good chicken breast and fresh salad. It has been long enough that if I was going to have a reaction, it would have happened by now. Hope this can help.

Caro’s Mexican Restaurant is located at 3505 Bluebonnet Circle, Ft. Worth, TX 76109. 817-924-9977 This is a neighborhood restaurant that has been in business since 1959. John has been serving me for the last several months and we have been working on what can be made GF. They use only fresh ingredients and cook everything from scratch. They grind the spices on site. The chips are big and puffy and cooked to order and 100% corn. They are fried in a dedicated fryer. 95% of their menu can be made gluten free. The rice and beans, tacos, chalupas ,tamales, fajitias nachos, chicken with rice and pork chops are GF. The burrito can be made with an corn tortilla and melted cheese. Identify yourself as a Celiac and he will work with you to ensure you get a good meal. I like eating here because they have spices that are safe. John was initially reluctant to change recipes as he is very particular about his food and wants the customer to be happy. Judith Holton 3/04 email: johnwhitten@netscape.net.

Chick-fil-a GF food listing: http://chick-fil-a.com/gluten.asp
Chilis: Based on the most current ingredient statements available from our food suppliers and their stated absence of wheat, rye, oats and barley within these items, our corporate dietitian has compiled the list below of suggested menu options at Chili’s for individuals who are allergic to wheat and/or are gluten intolerant. We hope that you will find this list helpful during your next visit to our restaurant. Because this list expires on a MONTHLY basis, please be sure to contact us for an updated version. Chipotle Mexican Restaurants I have discovered that Chipotle Mexican Restaurants are Gluten Free when ordering a "Bol". I went into the one off I-75 and asked for an ingredient list. I did not notice any ingredients that were not good to us (other than the obvious flour tortilla). Renee Nelson 2/04
Chuy's Mexican Restaurant (my most favorite place!) sent me this response regarding their food. They are located at Central Expressway (75) at the Knox Henderson exit. Address is 4544 Mckinney Ave in Dallas. I looked into your request with a few of our staff members and assuming corn and corn-based products are okay, there are quite a few items you should be able to have. We have two sauces that are thickened with cornstarch rather than a roux, so they can have the tomatillo and ranchero sauces on enchiladas. Items like nachos and our chalupas should be ok. We can also offer you fajitas with corn tortillas instead of flour, and our salads should be wheat free (though you'll want to double check dressings). Any of our tacos can be ordered with corn tortillas, too. We pride ourselves on making dishes to order, so please don't hesitate to ask for substitutions to fit your needs. We also encourage you to ask your server any questions you might have and they can check with the kitchen on any item you have reservations about. I hope this info helps and we hope to see you soon!
Testamonial: 5/19/2006 Hi, my name's Greg Olsen, I'm a student at UT Southwestern and my fiance has CD. We used your website to find something new to try and tried Chuy's. I just wanted to let you know that the flautas at Chuy's are not gluten-free, they dip the corn tortillas in the same fryer they use for frying wheat products. However, they were incredibly helpful in putting together a meal she could eat. I would exhort you to tell your members of the service we received because it was very refreshing to have the manager and kitchen manager come sit down with us at the table during a Mavs playoff game to go over what she could and couldn't eat. Thanks, Greg S. Olsen
Classic Cafe in Southlake is on 1709. 817-410-9001 My husband went by before the meal and spoke with our server and the chef. They made me a wonderful fish dinner with veggies and potatoes. They asked about every item they were unsure of and went out of their way to make sure I had a great meal. I couldn't have any of the desserts unfortunately. This is a small cafe in the Timmaron shopping center. There is also one in Roanoke. They had steaks, wild game and pork as well Judith Holton 3/04

D & A, pizza, pasta, seafood and more, 580 W. Arapaho, Suite 130; 972-918-0006. I had a delicious pizza here and I am not a big fan of pizza. The variety of toppings and the gluten-free curst were very good and I look forward to eating there again. The owner will work with you to meet the needs of whatever allergies you have, he is very knowledgeable about healthy grains and I enjoyed visiting with him. Rose Mary Simmons, November 2007
Another happy D & A customer: I went to the restaurant for the first time last weekend. I was hungry for a take-out pizza since I haven't had one since my trip to Vancouver. The owner was very helpful with offering suggestions on toppings for my pizza. They have several GF toppings to choose from. The GF pizzas can only be made in a small size, but it was enough for 2 people. The ingredients were fresh and the crust was very tasty. I thoroughly enjoyed the pizza and will go back again. They also have a GF pasta so you can order one of their pastas dishes as well. The owner said he is planning on having some speakers come in to talk about special diets including gluten intolerance. This would be a great place for a small group of celiacs to enjoy dinner or lunch together. Pamela Rodgers October 2007

Everything is gluten-free, even the muffins (chebe). Avoid the smoked fish, that’s about it. Complete salad bar and then the Churrascaria part, waiters come around and cut slices of the greatest meat. You can eat too much food. The salad part is $25 and the churrascaria part is additional $25 or so. Very delicious!
Fresco's Mexican Cuisine: 30 of us showed up at Fresco's Mexican Cuisine for a gluten free dining experience. It was great. Click the hyperlink for the menu. The address is 7432 Denton Hwy, Watauga, TX. With 48 hours notice, the chips and taco shells and flautas will be fried in a dedicated fryer. Best to go on an "off" night and early.
IHOP if like me you have stopped going, you will be pleased to know you can ask for "shelled" eggs to be prepared in a separate pan. They add pancake batter to their eggs for normal preparation.

Las Lomas: I just found a marvelous new Mexcian food restaurant that's only been open for a short time in North Richland Hills. It's called Las Lomas, located at 8216 Bedford-Euless Rd., phone 817-577-3335 The staff couldn't have been nicer in accommodating my special diet. All their sauces, even sour cream, are made fresh every day. The salsa and sour cream are both gf, as are the chips. The chicken fahitas are not marinated in gluten containing sauces (the beef is). The rice and beans are both gf. The spinich/mushroom enchiladas are gf. Everything I've tried so far has been outstanding. For you folks in Dallas county, there are three other Las Lomas locations: 2215 N. O'Connor Rd in Irving, 10524 Harry Hines Blvd.#C, Dallas, and 8014 Harry Hines Blvd., Dallas. It's not inexpensive, but well worth it
Lavendou:( French ) 6/04 It is on Preston Road just north of Frankford in North Dallas. The things that I have had there are: Caesar Salad w/o croutons Mixed green salad and they will make you fresh vinaigrette Beef tenderloin with their mushroom sauce just ask them to make it for you with cornstarch (they are very happy to do this) Pomes Fritts (fried in their own fryer and the best I have ever had) Grilled fish and they will make a custom sauce for you Fresh vegetables Cream Brulee w/ Lavender Raspberry Soufflé These are they only things that I have had there. All you need to do is ask to speak with the chef and tell him what our restrictions are and he will tell you if he can do it or not based on what you would like to have to eat there. They even did a few special things for me for mother’s day lunch that were not on the menu. This has been one of our favorites for many years now and I was sad after being diagnosed that I might not be able to eat there again. All I did was ask and they were able to help us to continue to enjoy eating there. Please call me or e-mail me if you have any questions. Thanks, Kristin Brull

Rudy's Country Store and Bar-B-Que is a meat market that sells cooked meats. Our pits are 100% wood fired with oak, a slower burning wood as opposed to mesquite. Our meats are cooked in a dry spice, not in our "Sause" (we use it on the side). Our unique "Sause" is being shipped throughout the United States (and Texas, of course). This is a great place to eat. I bought the sauce to put on other things.

Gluten Free At TXLC If you suffer from Gluten Intolerance you don't have to limit yourself to salad when dining at Texas Land & Cattle. With fresh ingredients and items that are made to order you won't miss out on the TXLC Experience! Check out their website at http://www.txlc.com/files/gluten-free.aspx.
Texas Road House: The Texas Roadhouse has just updated their gluten info. It has some major differences from the old one, namely the steaks. You now have to ask them to leave something off the steak. Here they are the changes.
The Chocolate Angel: 635 W. Campbell Rd, Richardson, 972-234-8099. The owner’s daughter is celiac so she is familiar with the diet & could tell you exactly what to order. I had a chicken salad, fruit & spinach salad. All very good & unusual---not just garden variety salads. Kay Turner
The Oar House: 303 Hwy 30 Rockwall, TX 972-771-9687 is an excellent restaurant for us. It is upscale Italian in the evening.....but the chef does alot of dishes that are without Pasta. He does alot of sauces and I have found out that most of them are thickened with corn starch. The salad dressings are often made fresh and all the ones I have requested have been GF. The chef even sent out the bottle of champagne vinegar (without me saying anything about vinegar) to make sure it was acceptable to me. I can tell the wait staff what I want and ask the chef to modify anything that is not acceptable, and everything I have everordered has come out tasting great as well as being GF. Most dinner dishes run from $15-30 but lunch is more reasonable. This is my most favorite GF place to eat. It is fantastic. I feel very safe here, because I think the chef knows enough about CD to be aware of what our requirements are. Evening reservations are suggested...especially on the weekends."
Toy's Cafe: (Lemmon Avenue east of Lomo Alto Thai food - there shouldn't ever be wheat flour in Thai food" The food is fresh, delicious and made to order ( divine Thai lunch) Nancy Isreal 2/04

York Street: Nancy's husband told the staff that Nancy would need GF food when he made the reservations. When they arrived, the host noted that the chef was aware of Nancy's dining limitations and knew exactly what she could and could not have. In addition, the entire staff was aware that Nancy was eating GF, and they had even bought GF crackers for her ahead of time. She said, The service was incredible, the food was great and the atmosphere was lovely.
