Sent: Monday, April 07, 2008 6:05 PM To: rmpsimmons@sbcglobal.net Subject: Important Note about Rice Chex from Clan Thompson
Hi, In the Mini-List published in yesterday's news letter, Rice Chex cereal is listed as being gluten free. Please note that only the new REFORMULATED boxes of Rice Chex are gluten free. These boxes will be marked Gluten Free on the front of the box. General Mills says they are also being made in a dedicated facility so there's no cross contamination either. However, there are still old boxes on the shelf that contain barley malt and are not gluten free. Make sure you check the box for the Gluten Free labeling.

October 17, 2007: A Taste of Thai Peanut Noodles Quick Meal:The manufacturer says some packages are not gluten free, even though they were marked gluten free. Originally, they believed it was gluten free and included it on their list of GF foods. However, when someone later questioned them about the soy sauce, they investigated further and discovered there was wheat in the soy sauce. They have changed the recipe to include miso sauce instead of soy sauce and those packages are gluten free. However, the company strong recommends that you carefully read the label and call them if you have any questions.

September 24, 2007 Recently a lady with celiac disease asked Cynthia Kupper and myself about a product called GlutenEase. Below is Cynthia’s response:
This product is not advertised for persons with celiac disease but for persons with gluten intolerance that is not celiac disease. It will not stop the damage that is happening in the GI tract for persons with celiac disease.
Cynthia Kupper, RD, CD Executive Director Gluten Intolerance Group of North America® 31214 - 124 Ave SE, Auburn WA 98092-3667 Phone: 253-833-6655 Fax: 253-833-6675 www.GLUTEN.net www.GFCO.org www.GlutenFreeRestaurants.org
The website for the product is: http://www.enzymedica.com/products/GlutenEase?PHPSESSID=acc87d6bc3f8e5be44a7912d2b077745
And this is a response I got from Dr. Alessio Fasano about this product: Hi Betty,
I must agree with you on this. As far as I know, there have been no clinical trials to date to validate this stuff. The safest and most conservative way to approach this is to check the government web site for clinical trials ( www.clinicaltrial.gov ) and use the key word 'celiac disease". If the product did not go through the rigorous scrutiny of FDA, I would not trust it.
Alessio Fasano, M.D. Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, and Physiology Director, Mucosal Biology Research Center University of Maryland School of Medicine Health Science Facility II Room S345 20 Penn St. Baltimore, MD 21201
Beware, those of you with celiac disease and DH!! Do not take this product and expect it to allow you to eat gluten. Nothing on the market now will allow this. Betty

For those of you who shop Sprouts:
Sprouts has a Gluten Free and Wheat Free Guide that is available at the store to help you find their GF products in the store because they are not in one area. In the guide, there is a statement I want you to be aware of which is on page 2. Quoting from the guide: “Also when shopping, remember that wheat-free products may not be gluten free. Many “wheat alternatives” (such as kamut and spelt) also contain gluten and should be eaten with caution if you are avoiding gluten in your diet.”
For those of you with celiac disease or DH, you can never eat kamut or spelt. They do contain gluten and are not safe. Betty

The recalled "365 Organic Everyday Value Swiss Dark Chocolate Bars" are packaged in red-and-white wrappers with a picture of chocolate pieces and the Swiss countryside on the front. On the back of the wrapper there is a lot code that begins with the characters "L71423" followed by a four-digit time stamp between the times of 11:33 and 12:15. If the coding on the package is illegible, the product should also be returned.
Consumers who have purchased the product can return it to Whole Foods Market for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at (512) 542-0656 or at PrivateLabel.CustomerService@WholeFoods.com.
7/12/2007 According to Guest Relations @ Ruby Tuesday (GuestRelations@rubytuesday.com) they cannot guarantee any of their foods are GF due to possible contamination in handling and preparation. Substitutions are sometimes made onsite when the kitchen runs out of something and they cannot account for that. You could speak to the manager to see if they can suggest anything. From personal experience, I had a baked potato and ate from the salad bar which is quite extensive. If you know you are going, requesting the potato not be cut open in the kitchen and taking your own butter would be the safest way to go.
